The purple mitten pattern

This is the pattern I created for my nephew. It's about as simple a mitten pattern can be. It's sized to fit a 3yr old.
Opal fingering weight, 2 strands. A 100gm ball makes 6 mittens. (1/5/07 - NOTE one ball just barely makes 6 mittens. I ran out with about 6 rows to go on the thumb of the 6th mitten. If I'd used shorter yarn ends on the other 5 mittens I probably would've been ok. )
Double pointed needles, 2.75mm (US size 1) for the ribbing and 3.25mm (US size 3) for the rest (I worked with 4 dpns)
About 18" of waste yarn, similar in weight to the 2strands of Opal
Gauge 6stitch and 8rows per inch in stockinette
Abbreviations:
k - knit, p - purl, st - stitches, k2tog - knit 2 together

Using the smaller needles, cast on 30st and K3P2 for 16 rows.
Switching to the larger needles, knit 15 rows
Using the waste yarn, knit 6st. Slip these 6 st back to the left hand needle. Continue knitting with the Opal for another 17 rows.

Mitten top decreases:
Round 1 - *K4, K2Tog, repeat from * 4 more times (25 st)
Rounds 2, 4, 6, 8 - K all st
Round 3 - *K3, K2Tog, repeat from * 4 more times (20 st)
Round 5 - *K2, K2Tog, repeat from * 4 more times (15 st)
Round 7 - *K4, K2Tog, repeat from * 4 more times (10 st)
Round 8 - K2, K2Tog, K3, K2Tog, K1 (8 st)
Cut yarn and pull yarn through remaining stitches. Pull tight and weave in end.

Thumb:
Carefully remove the waste yarn. Put the needles in the 12 stitches that are created when the waste yarn is removed.
Round 1 - Knit around and pick up 3 more stitches in the corners (15 st)
Round 2 - Knit around
Round 3 - Knit around and decrease one stitch in each corner (13 st)
Rounds 4 - 16 Knit (13 rounds after the decrease round)
Round 17 - K2tog around, end with K1 (7 st)
Cut yarn and pull yarn through remaining stitches. Pull tight and weave in end.
Weave in other ends.
